"Exploring Pallegama, a Hidden Gem in Sri Lanka: My Journey to Aradunu Ella Falls"
Welcome to my travel blog! In this post, I'll take you on a picturesque journey to Pallegama, a quaint village nestled in the heart of Passara, Badulla, Sri Lanka. This serene village is not only home to my father's roots but also boasts one of Sri Lanka's most scenic waterfalls, Aradunu Ella Falls. Join me as I explore the geography, climate, and rich heritage of Pallegama.
Geography and Climate:
Pallegama is a remote village characterised by its lush greenery, rolling hills, and a refreshing climate. Located in the Badulla district, this region is blessed with a pleasant climate throughout the year, thanks to its elevation. The cool breeze and occasional mist make it a perfect destination for nature lovers.
Family Roots and Agriculture:
My father hails from a family of eight children, and his father, a respected "Arachchi," played a pivotal role in the village's governance. The family was deeply connected to agriculture, cultivating paddy fields and vegetables, contributing to the self-sufficiency of the village.

The Journey to Pallegama:
My wife, Fazmina, and I decided to visit my father's village after our wedding. We chose the long weekend at the end of September 2023 for our expedition. Early Thursday morning, we embarked on our journey, reaching Passara by 12:30 PM. We were warmly welcomed by my aunt, my father's elder sister, who resides in my grandfather's ancestral home.

Exploring the Village Estate:
The village estate, spanning 400 perches, is a treasure trove of natural beauty. It includes the family house, a small tea estate, Areca palm trees, coconut trees, endemic plants, vegetable gardens, banana and fruit trees, and abundant wildlife. We took a leisurely stroll, relishing the vibrant flora and fauna.
A Scenic Tea Estate Adventure:
In the evening, my brother Thimila, Fazmina, and I decided to explore the tea estate that extended to a hilltop. Ascending through the lush tea bushes, we were greeted by an awe-inspiring view. We marveled at the Namunukula Mountain, layered paddy fields, and gem mining plants. The sight of "Loggal Oya," which flows from the Namunukula range to the "Loggal Oya reservoir" in Mahiyanganaya, left us in awe.
Loggal Oya: A Lifeline for the Village:
Loggal Oya is a vital water source for the village. It originates from the Namunukula range and flows through the village's paddy fields, providing essential irrigation. This lifeline ensures the prosperity of the community by sustaining agriculture and the livelihoods of the villagers.
